THE BROAD & HIGH TEAM FOLLOWED THIS MULTIFACETED ARTIST TO A FEW VENUES AND SAT DOWN WITH MOXY IN THEIR HOME STUDIO TO TALK ABOUT THEIR JOURNEY AND WHY THEY ARE DRIVEN TO PASS ALONG THEIR PASSION FOR SYNTH MUSIC.

I THINK ABOUT BEING SINGLE DIGITS LOOKING AT MY DAD'S RECORD COLLECTION WHICH I HAVE A LOT OF THEM OVER HERE.
AND ACCESSING WHATEVER FEELS GOOD.
AND NOT TRYING TO PUSH A FEELING.
IT WAS THE EVE OF MY 21st BIRTHDAY.
SEPTEMBER 11, 1999 AT 11:50 A. M. WE ARE ALL OUT OF OUR MINDS, PLAYING UNO, BEING SILLY.
THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY FRIEND JEFFREY PUTS ON THIS VERY SPECIFIC CLUB TRACK.
AND IT LAUNCHED MY BRAIN INTO I DON'T KNOW.
THIS ALMOST INCREDIBLE PSYCHIC MOMENT.
IT WAS CALLED BODY ROCK, THE THUNDER POST CLUB MIX.
AND, THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT THE ENERGY, THE FREQUENCIES.
JUST ALL OF IT.
I JUST SAT BACK ON THE COUCH AND IT WAS LIKE THE SKY OPENED UP AND I SAW THE NEXT TEN TO 15 YEARS OF MY LIFE.
THEN I THINK IT WAS 2004, I PUT MY VERY FIRST D. J. MIXER ON LAY AWAY AT SAM ASH.
IT WAS THIS INTUITIVE INSTINCT THING OF THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO DO.
AND IF I HAVE TO PUT IT ON LAY AWAY AND WAIT A LITTLE BIT LONGER, THEN THAT'S WHAT I HAVE TO DO.
BUT I ALWAYS HAD THE MIX TAPES RUNNING IN MY HEAD.
AND I NEEDED A WAY TO GET THESE MIX TAPES OUT OF MY HEAD AND OUT INTO MY COMMUNITY.
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.
AND IT HAS BEEN NEVER ENDING.
I'M STILL DJING.
AND, I'M JUST FULL OF HUMILITY AND GRATITUDE THAT I HAVEN BE ABLE TO ACCESS ALL OF THIS D. J.
STUFF INSIDE OF ME TO CREATE THIS VERY KIND OF SIGNATURE SPACE.
SO BEING ABLE TO ACCESS MY INTUITIVE NATURE OF YEAH, THESE CERTAIN TRACKS GO TOGETHER OR THIS ENVIRONMENT NEEDS A DIFFERENT AUDIO ATMOSPHERE AND BEING ABLE TO SHIFT THAT, MANIPULATE IT.
AND IT IS NOT OUT OF POWER OR EGO BUT OUT OF CONNECTION.
I'M LOOKING OUT IN THE ROOM AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE CONNECTED TO MY AUDIENCE AND NOT SEPARATE AND ABOVE, BUT ON THEIR LEVEL.
SEEING THEM EYE TO EYE AND EAR TO EAR.
ALL THE SENSES, VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.
FOR A LONG TIME.
THE INSPIRATION WAS JUST SADNESS.
FROM LOSING FRIENDS, PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS.
AND THERE HAS BEEN A SHIFT I THINK AND MAYBE IT IS JUST AGING, GETTING OLDER.
WHERE I REALIZE I DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO COMPOSE WHEN I'M SAD.
I CAN ALSO COMPOSE WHEN IT'S BEEN A GREAT DAY AND I'M FEELING ENERGETIC SO REALLY, INSPIRATIONS ARE LIKE HUGE WAVES IN THE OCEAN.
SOMETIMES THEY ARE BIG.
SOMETIMES THEY ARE SMALL.
BUT BEING ABLE TO ACCESS THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT NO MATTER WHAT IT IS.
BECAUSE SOME OF MY BEST WORK HAS COME FROM THOSE SAD MOMENTS BUT ALSO SOME OF MY BEST WORK HAS COME FROM THE VERY AMPLIFIED JUST FEELINGS OF EXULTATION OF INNER POWER AND EMPOWERMENT.
AND OVERCOMING SOMETHING HUGE I DIDN'T HAVE THE TYPE OF PLATFORM AND SUPPORT THAT I, NOT THAT I NECESSARILY NEED.
YES, I DID NEED IT.
I DID NEED IT.
AS A QUEER HALF HISPANIC ADOPTED PERSON WHO LOVED POP MUSIC BUT NOT LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE.
I LOVED ENYA, ENIGMA.
ALL OF THE NEW AGE ELECTRONIC STUFF.
I DIDN'T HAVE ANYBODY ELSE WHO LIKED THAT KIND OF STUFF SO NOW THAT I'M IN THIS WORLD, I FEEL LIKE IT IS MY CALLING AND VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO CREATE THE ATMOSPHERES AND ENVIRONMENTS AND PLATFORMS THAT I DID NOT HAVE, GROWING UP IN THE 90s AND ALSO EVEN STARTING MY D. J.
CAREER IN THE EARLY TO MID 2000s.
IT IS REALLY, REALLY SPECIAL AND IMPORTANT TO SHOW THE ADULT COMMUNITY AND THE YOUTH COMMUNITY THAT SYNTHESIZERS ARE NOT INACCESSIBLE.
YOU DON'T NEED A ROCKET SCIENTIST DEGREE TO BE CURIOUS AND HAVE FUN WITH SOUND.
TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE AND ENVIRONMENT OF TOTAL INCLUSIVITY IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR COMMUNITY CARE.
AND VERY IMPORTANT TO SHOW THAT SYNTHESIZERS AND SYNTH MUSIC ARE IN EVERY FACET OF EVERY PERSON'S LIFE.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE GUYS FROM STRANGER THINGS FOR REALLY JUST EXPLODING THAT OPEN BECAUSE THAT GIVES ME A CHANCE TO RELATE TO YOUNGER PEOPLE AND MAYBE PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW SYNTHESIZER MUSIC OUTSIDE OF THE STRANGER THINGS SOUNDTRACK AND THEME TUNE.
IT MAKES PEOPLE EXCITED.
TO BE ABLE TO SHOW BEING VERY ECSTATIC AND INTERESTED IN INTERACTING WITH SOUND IN REALTIME IS SOMETHING THAT ANYBODY CAN DO.
SO CREATING ATMOSPHERES WHERE I'M NOT ONLY SUPPORTING MY COMMUNITY, BUT I'M ALSO POSSIBLY GENERATING YOU KNOW, DONATIONS FOR NON-PROFITS FROM THE WORK THAT I DO, TO SHOW COHESIVENESS IN MY COMMUNITY.
THAT I'M NOT JUST DOING THIS FOR MY OWN GAIN.
IT IS SOMETHING THAT I WANT TO SHOW EVERYONE THAT JUST BE CURIOUS.
IF YOU ARE CURIOUS ABOUT HOW TO INTERACT WITH SOUND IN REALTIME, COME TO MY SYNTH SLAM THAT HAPPENED EVERY FALL IN AUGUST OR SEPTEMBER.
NOT HAVING THE TYPE OF SUPPORT THAT I HAD GROWING UP AND BEING INTERESTED IN DIFFERENT MUSIC IS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SHOW PEOPLE THEY ARE SUPPORTED AND THAT THEY ARE DOING IS IMPORTANT TO THE WHOLE OF ART SOCIETY.
CREATING THOSE PLATFORMS, IT JUST BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY AND I FEEL JUST HUGE GRATITUDE WHEN SOMEONE TOUCHES A KNOB OR MAKES A PATCH AND THEIR FACE LIGHTS UP LIKE OH MY GOSH, THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE IN MY LIFE.

A CHANCE VISIT TO CHINA MORE THAN 15 YEARS AGO CHANGED HER TRAJECTORY.
WITH HER CAMERA, SHE FOCUSES ON THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL NARRATIVES OF UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUPS.
LET'S LEARN MORE.

A HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND VISUAL STORY TELLER, I WENT TO VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY FOR MY UNDERGRAD DEGREE.
A GUY I WAS DATING AT THE TIME MOVED TO SHANGHAI TO HELP HIS BROTHER WHO HAD AN ARCHITECTURE FIRM IN SHANGHAI AND ASKED IF I WANTED TO GO AND I SAID YES.
SO, IN 2008, I MOVED TO CHINA.
IT WAS A BIG CHANGE.
I HAD A HARD TIME ADJUSTING.
I WAS APPLYING TO PHOTO STUDIOS FOR ASSISTING WORK AND I HAD ONE STUDIO TELL ME BLATANTLY, WE WILL NOT HIRE WOMEN BECAUSE OUR CLIENTS WILL NOT RESPECT YOU.
I STARTED PLANNING A BICYCLE TOUR AROUND CHINA.
I KIND OF HAD TO DO WITH THIS REALLY BIG DEPRESSION I FELL INTO AND I KNEW I HAD TO CHANGE MY LIFE IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
IT ENDED UP LASTING ABOUT TWO YEARS.
AND A BIT OVER 15,000 MILES.
I ENDED UP WANDERING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
SPENT FOUR OR FIVE MONTHS IN UZBEKISTAN, KAZAKHSTAN.
I GOT SICK AND DECIDED NO MORE BIKES.
I WILL STAY AND DOCUMENT IN THE COUNTRY SIDE.
THE WEGERS ARE A GROUP OF PEOPLE PERSECUTED BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT.
THEY SPEAK A LANGUAGE THAT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO TURKISH AND UZBEK.
IT'S OWN LANGUAGE.
THE FURTHER I GOT, THE MORE I BECAME COMFORTABLE WITH IT.
SLEEPING UNDER THE ROAD.
SLEEPING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD EXPOSED.
RIDING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS DURING THE WINTERTIME I JUST BECAME USED TO IT.
IT BECAME SECOND NATURE AND WAS ALMOST LIKE UNCOMFORTABLE BECAME COMFORTABLE.
I THINK IT WAS THE SECOND MONTH OF MY BIKE TOUR THAT A MAN DECIDED HE WAS GOING TO LOCK ME IN A ROOM WITH HIM AND HE WAS GOING TO HAVE HIS WAY WITH ME.
AND THAT WAS NOT THE LAST TIME.
BUT IT WAS ONE OF THE MORE INTENSE TIMES.
I WAS ABLE TO GET AWAY.
WHEN I'M OUT THERE ON THESE ADVENTURES AND EXPEDITIONS, I DON'T SEE MYSELF AS AN AMERICAN.
I DON'T SEE MYSELF AS WHITE.
I DON'T SEE MYSELF AS A WOMAN.
I DON'T SEE THESE LABELS.
I'M JUST EXISTING.
EVERY TIME I WOULD BE HARASSED, IT'S LIKE THANKS FOR MAKING ME REMEMBER ALL THAT STUFF.
THANKS FOR MAKING ME REMEMBER ALL THESE LABELS THAT I DON'T WANT TO ADHERE TO.
BUT EVENTUALLY, I GET TO THIS POINT WHERE I'M RIDING DOWN THIS GRAVEL ROAD AND THERE'S A BUNCH OF TIBETAN PRAYER FLAGS.
THIS MONK INVITES ME INTO HIS HOUSE.
I'M TIRED AND HUNGRY.
ON THE MORNING HIS SISTERS WERE GETTING DRESSED TO GO TO THE MARKET PUTTING ON THESE BEAUTIFUL GOWNS OF THIS DEEP RICH RED AND AND I STARTED PHOTOGRAPHING THEM.
AND I REMEMBER THAT EXACT MOMENT.
PHOTOGRAPHING THESE WOMEN.
AND THEIR HOME.
I DIDN'T EVEN.
I WASN'T EVEN EXISTING THERE.
I WAS ABLE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER.
I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER.
IF I HAD TO SUM IT UP IN ONE SENTENCE WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME ABOUT IT, YEAH, I LEARNED TO LOVE MYSELF.
I WAS IN MY EARLY 30s.
FIGURING MYSELF OUT AND I FIGURED OUT WHAT I WANTED TO DO.
I STARTED PHOTOGRAPHING TIBETANS AND UYGHURS AND IT SEEMED TO BE MY CALLING.
>> THEIR CULTURE WILL DISAPPEAR, HER PHOTOGRAPHY IS CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT IS GOING ON.
I'M IN ALL OF HER PASSION AND ALL OF HER PERSEVERANCE.
AND HOW MUCH SHE LOVES THESE PEOPLE.
I ASKED HER ONCE, I WISH I HAD THE PASSION SHE HAS FOR SOMETHING LIKE SHE HAS FOR REPRESENTING THESE PEOPLE FOR THE PERSECUTED.
PEOPLE TALK ABOUT OH AS A WOMAN, YOU HAVE TO TAKE DIFFERENT PRECAUTIONS.
YOU HAVE TO BE MORE CAREFUL.
BUT I ALSO BELIEVE IF YOU HAVEN'T FOUND THE BENEFIT OR THE PERKS OR THE STRENGTHS OF BEING A WOMAN, YOU HAVEN'T FOUND YOUR POWER OF BEING A WOMAN YET.
THE FACT THAT I AM LET INTO HOUSEHOLDS.
MOTHERS GIVE ME THEIR CHILDREN TO HOLD AND LEAVE TO WORK IN THE FIELD WHILE I'M IN THEIR HOUSE WITH THEIR CHILDREN, LIKE, I DON'T THINK A MAN WOULD HAVE THOSE OPTIONS AND I KNOW THEY DON'T.
I HAVE TALKED TO PLENTY.
THEY SAY YOU GET ACCESS THAT WE DON'T GET.
SO THERE'S A FEW WOMEN THAT STAND OUT IN MY MIND.
MOST VIVIDLY.
ONE WOULD BE JAMIANG AND HER MOTHER GALA.
GALA IS THE MATRIARCH OF THE HOUSEHOLD.
AND SHE HAS A DAUGHTER PROBABLY ABOUT FIVE OR SIX YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME.
I WAS NOT JUST A GUEST.
I LEARNED HOW TO HERD YAKS.
THEY THOUGHT IT WAS VERY HUMOROUS WHEN I COULD NOT MILK A YAK.
I HELPED WITH FOOD.
I BECAME PART OF THE FAMILY.
AND THESE WOMEN GET UP BEFORE THE MEN, BEFORE SUNRISE AND GET TO WORK IMMEDIATELY.
AND THEY ARE THE LAST TO GO TO BED.
IT IS CONSTANT WORK.
THEY LIVE IN ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ENVIRONMENTS AND FACING THESE ISSUES.
AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.
IT IS JUST EVERY DAY IS GOING TO BE A STRUGGLE BUT THEY FACE IT WITH SUCH COMPASSION FOR ONE ANOTHER.
SO DURING SUMMER OF 2022, I COMPETED IN AN ULTRA ENDURANCE BICYCLE RACE.
IT IS NOTED AS THE MOST DIFFICULT RACE IN THE WORLD.
I WAS THE ONLY WOMAN FROM NORTH AMERICA TO COMPLETE THE RACE.
A TOTAL OF THREE WOMEN FINISHED THE RACE.
SO I ARRIVED A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE RACE BECAUSE I WANTED TO ACCLIMATE.
UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS ONE OF THE CYCLISTS THAT GOT VERY SICK.
AND DURING THOSE FOUR OR FIVE DAYS OF BEING SICK, I WAS JUST CRYING NONSTOP.
I WAS CONVINCED I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO RACE.
AND I WAS LIKE IT'S JUST ALL GONE.
IT IS OVER.
I TRIED TO RECOVER AS MUCH AS I COULD.
I SHOWED UP AT THE START LINE AND I ENDED UP AT THE FINISH LINE 15 MINUTES BEFORE CUTOFF.
SO EVEN WITH ALL OF THAT HAPPENING, I STILL FINISHED THAT RACE.
I LEARNED WHAT BEING BRAVE AND RESILIENT IS ALL ABOUT AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I LEARNED WHAT THAT IS BY WATCHING AND LIVING WITH THE WOMEN I DID OUT THERE.
THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ARE BRAVE AND RESILIENT AND COMPASSIONATE.
THESE PEOPLE SHOWED ME WHO I AM.
AND I ALSO HOPE WHEN PEOPLE SEE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS OR HEAR THESE STORIES THE VIEWER ISN'T OVERCOME WITH A SENSE OF HOPELESSNESS.
I HOPE THEY CAN LOOK AT THEIR OWN LIVES A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY OR LOOK AT THEIR OWN COMMUNITY AND BE INSPIRED BY THESE PEOPLE THAT ARE FACING SOME OF THE WORST INJUSTICES ANYONE COULD IMAGINE.
THEY STILL PERSEVERE.
